Camp John J Nerden RTC Camp located in Middlefield, CT had been in existence since the mid 1960’s.
The Camp was started in cooperation with the Southington, Cheshire and Meriden Associations of Retarded Citizens.
At that time the Town’s Park and Recreation Departments were approached and asked to support this camp by “donating” the per camper, per day cost of each camper that attended from their own town.
Best Buddies Program – CT Middle School Chapter of the Year!
The Dodd Middle School Best Buddies Program has had a very successful year.
The program was awarded the Connecticut Middle School Chapter of
The Year Award in March! The students and faculty have put forth great effort this year.
Best Buddy activities have included monthly buddy lunches, arts and crafts theme parties after school, Irish dancing and music program, bingo and bowling. The students have enjoyed getting to know their buddies and participating in all the group activities.
Jennifer Straub is Meriden's Teacher of the Year for 2006 and she has joined the faculty at Benjamin Franklin Elelmentary School as the school's Instructional Associate.

Cheshire Challengers Red Sox Open their 2003 Season – May 2003
The Cheshire Challengers Red Sox opened their season on Saturday, May 3rd with two games back-to-back at The Challenger Fun Day in Berlin. Joel Kelleher’s grand slam was the talk of the day.
Rain threatened, but stayed away for the Red Sox first “official” game on at Darcey Field on May 6th against the Trumbull Challengers team.
Joel Kelleher and Nick Komarowski showed their great fielding ability. Kelleher’s line drive home run was the talk of this game also. Brain Zanzal stopped the Trumbull team as short stop. Rookie, Michelle Brady played like a 3-year veteran, while another rookie, Chris Savulis proved he could out run any hit.
Chris Lesky showed his stuff while Matt Baker and Dale Canale showed off their batting skills.
The Challengers gave Trumbull a run for their money. A Great way to start a season!

The Cheshire Challengers Red Sox played their last regular season game today against the Bristol Red Sox at Darcey field.

Cheshire Town Council Votes to Support Camp Nerden – April 2006
The Cheshire Town Council voted to add $10,000.00 into the Park and Recreation Budget to support The John J Nerden RTC Camp in Middlefield, CT.
The Special Needs Camp has been in operation for over 40 years. The camp is funded by requests for funding through the communities Park and Recreation Departments, donations from local civic organizations and individual donations.
The Dodd Middle School Best Buddies ended their fist full school year with a Kickball game against the Dodd Faculty on June 13, 2006.
The Faculty gave it their best, but came up short. Unofficial score keeper, Matt Baker reported The Buddies took the game with 20 points vs. the Faculty’s 3 points.
Refreshments were served after the game. The Buddies received certificates of recognition for their participation in the program. The 8th Grade Buddies, who will be moving on to the High School, received a photo of the group and a Best Buddies Frame.

Cheshire Special Olympics Golf Season begins.
The Cheshire Special Olympics Golf program started it's Summer of Golf on Monday July 10 at 6:00pm.
Vicki Parker returned this season as Assistant Coach, whlie Peter Webster took over the position as Head Coach. New this season, not to Special Olympics, but to the position, is Barbara Hedden as Team Manager. Practices will be held each Monday at sleeping Giant through
September, with the Fall Festival ending the season on September 10, 2006.

“The neighbors deserve this! What better way to repay them for all they have done for us than to have an ice cream party! Seems like almost every day I’m surprised by someone’s act of kindness. Easter morning our lawn is covered in colorful eggs filled with surprises for our kids done by a “mystery” neighbor.” Her nomination continued, “But most of all let’s always remember the day when my special needs son was missing and he was found at the “Safe House”…..our neighbor’s safe house.” DiTota concluded “this isn’t just a neighborhood; it’s a community of friends.”

Power Ridge Plan Headed To Vote On April 10 (Camp Nerden) March 8, 2007

MIDDLEFIELD -- Residents finally will get a chance to vote on whether to seek funds to purchase some or all of the land associated with the shuttered Powder Ridge Ski Area.
The land not used for the ski slope - about 150 acres - would be owned by the town and be preserved as open space or recreational use. The town would also gain rights to about 16 acres now used for the Nerden Camp fronting Powder Hill Road

The consequences of underagedrinking were examined from a legal perspective during an alcohol awareness forum at Cheshire Town Hall on April 26. Called “Underage and Under the Influence,” the event revealed how parents could be held liable if their minor children drink at home.
As part of Alcohol Awareness Week sponsored by the Human and Youth Service Committees, the forum presented eight panelists who are intimately associated with the health and welfare of juveniles who drink. Read More

Coach, Peter Webster and members of the Cheshire Special Olympics Golf Team participated in the 2007 Lyman Orchards Golf Skills Jamboree on Sunday July 22.
The Jamboree is held annually at Lyman Orchards as a part of the Special Olympics Golf season which begins in early July and concludes with the Fall Festival Golf tournament held at Sleeping Giant Golf Course in Hamden. Weekly Practice is held at Sleeping Giant Golf Course.

For two years, a group of parents have been raising money for a brand new playground, one that is accessible to every child regardless of ability.

After two cancellations, the weather finally cooperated for the start of the 4th season of Cheshire Park and Recreation's Adaptive "Tee Time" Golf.
Coach Bill Slone instructs the participants in basic golf skills in a fun, non-competitive environment. The program is held at Cheshire Academy of Golf driving range but will also include practice on the golf course some of the evenings.
Nerden RTC Camp 2007 Service Club Picnic
The Camp Nerden Dance Team performed their routine to "Anyway" at the 42nd Annual John J Nerden RTC Camp Service Club Picnic held on Monday, August 6, 2007.
The picnic is held to recognize and thank the many Service Clubs and Groups that provide support to the camp each season. A special thank you went out to Tower Farms of Cheshire, CT for their many years of support to the Camp’s Annual Halloween party. Traci Holden to run in the NY Marathon to benefit Tri-Town Special Olympics
Traci Holden, Co-Local Coordinator for the Tri-Town Special Olympics Program, will be running in the NYC Marathon on November 4, 2007 to benefit her local Special Olympics Program. Her goal is raise $2,620 ($100 per mile of the race - 26.2 miles) to support the over 120 athletes who train and compete with the Tri-Town Special Olympics program in the Meriden and Wallingford areas. Parents push to keep barrier-free park in capital plan

CHESHIRE - With a Town Council vote on the five-year capital budget scheduled for Thursday, supporters of a new barrier-free playground in Bartlem Park turned out in force Monday night in an effort to ensure the town's proposed $140,000 contribution to the project stays in the spending plan.

Unified Cross- Country is a Statewide Connecticut Special Olympics Team for distance running. The teams practice together once a week at different locations throughout the state. During the week they run on their own, with a partner, or a friend. During the season they meet with other team members from through out the state to run road races and cross-country races. They work hard but also have a lot of fun!

On November 20th, in the Old Judiciary Room at the State Capital, Special Olympics Connecticut, the Law Enforcement Torch Run, and Foxwoods hosted a press conference to announce that Connecticut is hosting the world in 2009!

John F. Kennedy Students Walk for Autism
John F. Kennedy students are participating in the annual walk to raise funds for autism. The walk takes place June 8 at Walnut Hill Park in New Britain.
JFK students are sponsoring a team, "Adrian Aces." Adrian is the son of JFKWorld Language teacher Jessica Serrano. Students may purchase a footprint for $1. They are hoping to sell 2,400 footprints that would equal the same amount of steps needed to complete the 800-meter walk around Walnut Hill Park.
The event kicked off March 17 and continued through April 1. The response has been overwhelming. Colorful footprints are lining the hallways of JFK.
WATERBURY - Easter Seals of Waterbury recently launched the First Partners program to provide autism early intervention services.

Playground Construction In Full Swing Josh Morgan; Herald staff

On Wednesday, April 23 spring truly arrived because that day marked the first day of practice for the Civitan Challengers.
Cries of "Play Ball!" resounded on the field before the practice even began - all the players were anxious to get started. Veterans and rookies took the field and took turns at batting practice. After months of waiting, the Kids In Motion playground finally had its grand opening over the weekend and hundreds of people came to enjoy the new facility.

WALLINGFORD - Carrie Palange doesn't have to wonder how her athletes enjoyed their first season of Unified volleyball at Sheehan. The day after the season ended earlier this month, Palange passed by a handful of them on their way to class.
They only had one question for her. "They asked, 'Can we play volleyball today? The gym's open,'" laughed Palange.

Members of the Cheshire Special Olympics Golf Team participated in the 2008 Lyman Orchards Golf Skills Jamboree on Sunday, July 20.
The Jamboree is held annually at Lyman Orchards for teams in this region as a part of the Special Olympics Golf season which begins in early July and concludes with the Fall Festival Golf tournament in September. Joel Kelleher of Cheshire Special Olympics was one of the two Special Olympics Athletes form the State of CT chosen to participate in the GE Charity Golf Tournament, to benefit Special Olympics held on September 2 at Ridgewood Country Club in Danbury CT.
Joel was chosen for his 290' drive at the CT Special Olympics Skills Competition held at Lyman Orchards earlier in the season.
Joel was stationed at the 5th hole at Ridgewood and took in donations for each long drive. He single-handedly raised 790.00 to benefit CT Special Olympics.

Their season began on August 27 and will end with some members running in the Bristol Mum-A-Thon Roadrace and others running in the Rhode Island Cross Country Invitational. Both events are slated to take place on October 19, 2008.
Unified Cross- Country is a Statewide Connecticut Special Olympics Team for distance running. The teams practice together once a week at different locations throughout the state. During the week they run on their own, with a partner, or a friend. During the season they meet with other team members from through out the state to run road races and cross-country races. They work hard but also have a lot of fun!

Guilford Public Schools occupational therapist recently won a grant from the Guilford Fund for Education, a nonprofit organization that supports innovation in schools, to purchase a Wii console to use with her students who have autism-spectrum disorders.
A special education teacher at Dwight School in Fairfield, in an apparent effort to distract a 6-year-old girl with autism from fixating on her striped shirt and scratching herself, had the girl take off the shirt. The child then sat in the classroom naked from the waist up for about 15 minutes before a paraprofessional who saw what had happened notified the principal.

The Challenger Division was established in 1989 as a separate division of Little League Baseball to enable boys and girls with physical and mental challenges, ages 5-18 or the completion of high school, to enjoy the game of baseball along with the millions of other children who participate in this sport worldwide".
Challenger Day hosted special appearances by New Britain Rock Cat players and Rocky the Rock Cat. There was also an array of carnival-type games, clowns and several other attractions for the teams who are not playing on the baseball field.

After two consecutive rain- socked Tuesdays, the Cheshire Challengers Red Sox finally played their first home game at Darcey field on May 19th against the Bristol Challenger team. The Red Sox team is coached this season by John Hendricks and returning assistants, Andy Zanzal and John Bouteiller.
Joanie Townsend, Darcey School teacher and Cheshire Challengers Coach was presented with the Darcy Citizenship Award on Wednesday, May 20. Many of Joanie's past and present students, co-workers, players and parents waited on the field to surprise Joanie as she arrived for a scheduled Challengers game. Joanie has been a Coach and Board member with the Cheshire Challengers for more than 20 years so it seemed fitting that she be given this award on the Challengers field.
Principal, Barbara Stern presented Joanie with a plaque that will hang in Darcey School.
This award has only been given to 10 people since 1969.
Town Manager, Michael Milone was on-hand to make one of Joanie's lifelong wishes come true! He presented her with a certificate good for one ride, with no time limit, on a street sweeper at a time to be determined later. Pizza was served and then it was time to PLAY BALL! See Photos

Club members rode one road bike for a continuous 12 hours and at the same time club members rode in the woods at the club for a continuous 12 hours totaling 24 hours!!!
